Cedar Lake
Manitoba
Detailed scouting intelligence for Cedar Lake, Manitoba. Fishing data, seasonal tips, terrain info, and expert guidance for Canadian outdoor adventures.
Primary Species
Seasonal Tips
Spring: walleye push toward the Saskatchewan River's current after ice-out — jig the seams and channel edges. Summer: fish the humps — bottom bouncers and spinner rigs in 6–10 m find the schools; pike wait in every flooded bay. Fall: walleye group tighter on structure and the big pike feed shallow again. The lake is shallow and wide open — wind builds nasty chop fast, so pick protected water on breezy days.
About This Place
Cedar Lake is really a vast widening of the Saskatchewan River — 1,350 square kilometres of shallow, fertile water in west-central Manitoba whose levels have been regulated by the Grand Rapids generating station since the 1960s. The impoundment reshaped everything here, including the communities: the Chemawawin Cree Nation was relocated to Easterville when the water rose, a history worth knowing when you fish these shores. What the river brings is nutrients, and what the nutrients grow is fish: Cedar has been the site of one of Manitoba's most important commercial fisheries since the early 1930s.
For anglers the lake is a walleye and pike factory. This is stained, current-influenced water averaging only a few metres deep — about 10 m at maximum — so the fishing logic is riverine: walleye stack off the edges of humps and old channel lines in six to ten metres, and big pike use the flooded timber and marshy bays. Access runs through Grand Rapids at the east end off Highway 6. A Manitoba licence is required; check border-water and conservation limits current for the season.

Best Time to Visit
Spring (May-June): Post-ice-out is prime time for Pike. Water temperatures are ideal and fish are actively feeding after the long winter.
Summer (July-August): Switch to early morning and late evening bites. Deep water trolling produces best results.
Fall (September-October): Arguably the best season — cooler water triggers aggressive feeding. Fewer crowds and excellent catch rates.
Winter: Ice fishing is productive from January through March. Check ice conditions with local outfitters.
Terrain & Topography
A regulated widening of the Saskatchewan River: 1,350 km² of stained, fertile water over gravel, limestone, and mud, with a maximum depth near 10 m. Flooded timber, marshy bays, and drowned channel edges — a river system's structure wearing a lake's size.
Regulations & Permits
A valid Manitoba fishing licence is required for all anglers 16 and older. Licences can be purchased online through the provincial government website or at local tackle shops. Conservation licence holders have reduced catch limits. Check the current Manitoba Fishing Regulations Summary for species-specific size and catch limits — regulations for Pike are strictly enforced. Barbless hooks are mandatory in this zone. Catch-and-release is encouraged for trophy-sized fish to maintain the healthy population.
