Seasonal Tips

Spring: walleye at the tributary mouths and first breaks after the opener — dusk is the honest window. Summer: pike and the odd muskie along the weed lines (check the muskie season and size rules before targeting them); whitefish and trout sit deep. Fall: the muskie moment, if there is one — big baits, short days, cold hands. Village access makes this an easy add-on to any Mont-Laurier trip.

About This Place

Lac des Écorces gives its name to the municipality on Route 117 just east of Mont-Laurier, and its provincial inventory is one of the most interesting in the Hautes-Laurentides: walleye, northern pike, lake whitefish, perch, and lake trout — plus muskellunge, the Lièvre watershed's apex oddity, and a recorded brook trout–lake trout hybrid, the stocked "moulac" (splake) that Québec uses where neither parent species quite fits. Few lakes carry both a muskie record and a splake record; this one does.

In practice the fishery runs on walleye evenings and pike afternoons, with the whitefish and trout layer for those who fish deep, and the muskie as the low-odds, high-story prize — figure-eight every retrieve near the weed edges and you'll eventually meet one. Access is easy by Hautes-Laurentides standards: the village sits on the lake, launches are minutes from the 117, and Mont-Laurier's services are a short drive. Québec licence required; note that muskellunge carry their own seasons and size rules in the zone summary, separate from the walleye rules everyone reads first.

Best Time to Visit

Spring (May-June): Post-ice-out is prime time for Doré jaune. Water temperatures are ideal and fish are actively feeding after the long winter.
Summer (July-August): Switch to early morning and late evening bites. Deep water trolling produces best results.
Fall (September-October): Arguably the best season — cooler water triggers aggressive feeding. Fall colours make this an especially scenic time to visit.
Winter: Ice fishing is productive from January through March. Check ice conditions with local outfitters.

Terrain & Topography

The namesake lake of a Route 117 village east of Mont-Laurier: weed-edged bays and points over a basin deep enough for whitefish and trout, with muskellunge and stocked splake both on the provincial record.

Regulations & Permits

A valid Quebec fishing licence is required for all anglers 16 and older. Licences can be purchased online through the provincial government website or at local tackle shops. Conservation licence holders have reduced catch limits. Check the current Quebec Fishing Regulations Summary for species-specific size and catch limits — regulations for Doré jaune are strictly enforced. Bait restrictions may apply — check zone-specific rules. Catch-and-release is encouraged for trophy-sized fish to maintain the healthy population.
