Seasonal Tips

Spring: the freshet pushes feed into the lake — work the current seams where the Thompson enters, but expect stained water at the peak of runoff. Summer: rainbows and kokanee hold in the cooler mid-depths; troll early before the valley wind builds. Fall: kokanee turn and school toward spawning water while rainbows feed aggressively on the edges of the schools — small bright spoons cover both.

About This Place

Kamloops Lake is a 30-kilometre widening of the Thompson River between Kamloops and Savona, cut through the sagebrush benches of BC's dry Interior — a landscape of hoodoos, bunchgrass, and trains rolling both shores that could not look less like coastal British Columbia. The lake lent its name to the famous "Kamloops trout," the hard-fighting Interior rainbow strain that built the region's fly-fishing reputation, and rainbows remain the headline here alongside kokanee that school in the open basin.

Because the Thompson pours through it, the lake behaves like moving water at both ends: current seams off the river mouths concentrate feeding fish, and the inflow's spring freshet colours and cools the whole system on a schedule most lakes don't have. Wind is the tax — thermal gusts funnel down the valley most afternoons, so mornings are for boats. Highway 1 runs the south shore with pullouts and access at Savona's provincial park beach. A BC freshwater licence is required; check current Thompson-region regulations, which include specific rules on trout retention.

Best Time to Visit

Spring (May-June): Post-ice-out is prime time for Kamloops Trout. Water temperatures are ideal and fish are actively feeding after the long winter.
Summer (July-August): Switch to early morning and late evening bites. Deep water trolling produces best results.
Fall (September-October): Arguably the best season — cooler water triggers aggressive feeding. Fewer crowds and excellent catch rates.
Winter: Limited winter access. Check road conditions before heading out.

Terrain & Topography

A trench widening of the Thompson River through the dry Interior: sage benches and hoodoo bluffs above, current-touched deltas at both ends, and afternoon winds funnelled down the valley.
