Lake Trout
Coho Salmon
Steelhead

Seasonal Tips

Spring: steelhead run the north-shore tributaries at ice-out — fish the first deep pools above the river mouths, and expect the run to peak later here than anywhere else in Ontario. Summer: lake trout hold below the thermocline; downrig deep over offshore humps and shoals. Fall: coho and other salmon stage off river mouths in September — cast spoons at first light. Winter: the open lake never freezes reliably; fish only sheltered bays with verified thick ice.

About This Place

Lake Superior is the largest freshwater lake on Earth by surface area, and its Ontario waters are the wildest in the Great Lakes system. At 406 m deep it stays cold all year — the reason its native lake trout, nearly wiped out by sea lamprey in the mid-1900s, again support one of the strongest wild laker fisheries anywhere. Coho salmon cruise the nearshore in late summer, and steelhead push into the north-shore tributaries between Sault Ste. Marie and Thunder Bay every spring.

This is serious big water: fog banks, sudden swells, and offshore temperatures that rarely leave single digits. Most anglers work protected structure — river mouths, points, and island lees around Nipigon Bay, Rossport, and Michipicoten — rather than the open lake, and treat the marine forecast as part of the trip plan. An Ontario fishing licence is required; consult the provincial regulations summary for current limits on trout and salmon.

Best Time to Visit

Spring (May-June): Post-ice-out is prime time for Lake Trout. Water temperatures are ideal and fish are actively feeding after the long winter.
Summer (July-August): Switch to early morning and late evening bites. Deep water trolling produces best results.
Fall (September-October): Arguably the best season — cooler water triggers aggressive feeding. Fall colours make this an especially scenic time to visit.
Winter: Ice fishing is productive from January through March. Check ice conditions with local outfitters.

Terrain & Topography

The largest freshwater surface on Earth: 406 m deep, ringed by basalt headlands and boulder shorelines on the Ontario side, with cold, exceptionally clear water and river-mouth structure as the angler's anchor points.

Regulations & Permits

A valid Ontario fishing licence is required for all anglers 16 and older. Licences can be purchased online through the provincial government website or at local tackle shops. Conservation licence holders have reduced catch limits. Check the current Ontario Fishing Regulations Summary for species-specific size and catch limits — regulations for Lake Trout are strictly enforced. Barbless hooks are mandatory in this zone. Catch-and-release is encouraged for trophy-sized fish to maintain the healthy population.
