Seasonal Tips
Spring: walleye run the old river channel and tributary mouths after the opener — jig the current-touched water. Summer: island points and saddles at dawn for walleye and smallmouth; pike ambush in the weedy bays all day; camp on an island and fish the evening bite from your beach. Fall: fish regroup on the main channel structure and the paddling crowds vanish. Levels are managed — re-check your shallow routes each trip.
About This Place
The Poisson Blanc reservoir earned its fame twice: first among anglers, for the walleye and pike waters created when the Lièvre River was impounded, and then among paddlers, when its scattered islands became one of Québec's beloved island-camping destinations under the Parc régional du Poisson Blanc. From Notre-Dame-du-Laus, the reservoir spreads into a maze of bays, cliffs, and more than a hundred islands — and the same drowned-valley structure that makes it beautiful makes it fishy: points that plunge, saddles between islands, and old river channels that concentrate walleye.
The name — "whitefish lake" — comes honestly: lake whitefish share the water with the walleye, northern pike, smallmouth bass, and burbot of the provincial inventory. The park manages access thoughtfully, with launches and reservable island campsites that turn a fishing trip into a weekend expedition; a canoe, a rod, and a reserved island is the signature Poisson Blanc experience. Water levels are managed, so expect seasonal variation. A Québec licence is required; check the zone's walleye limits, and book island sites well ahead in summer.
