Primary Species
Seasonal Tips
Spring: walleye run the Bécancour's current through the lake — fish the seams and channel remnants at dusk after the opener. Summer: two metres of water warms fast; fish dawn, fish the shade lines, and let the pike in the weed edges save the afternoons. Fall: cooling water wakes the walleye back up along the old channel. Shallow draft is the rule year-round — and every propeller stirs a lake already fighting sediment, so go electric or go paddle.
About This Place
Lac à la Truite d'Irlande wears its history in its name and its present in its species list. The trout that named it are long gone: this 124-hectare widening of the Bécancour River upstream of Thetford Mines now runs shallow — about two metres at its deepest — and warm, and the provincial inventory reads accordingly: walleye, northern pike, yellow perch, brown bullhead, and suckers. It is also a lake in a fight for its life, silting in under sediment from the region's old mining landscape, with a local protection association working to slow the clock.
Why list it at all? Because the fishing is real and the story matters. Two metres of fertile river-lake grows walleye food in quantity, the paddling is lovely — the lake sits on a 12.5-kilometre canoeable stretch of the Bécancour — and every angler who visits sees firsthand what sedimentation does to a waterbody. Fish it with river logic: current seams, channel remnants, weed edges. A Québec licence is required; walleye rules for the zone apply, and an electric-first approach suits both the depth and the lake's fragility.
