Seasonal Tips
August–September: the outfitted season — moose rutting in the river willows, caribou on the high plateaus where quotas allow, weather windows dictating flights. Book seasons ahead; Mackenzie Mountain hunts sell out years out. Residents: rivers are the roads — plan fuel caches and satellite comms like your life depends on them, because it does. The park boundary is closed to sport hunting, full stop — carry the map that proves you know where it is.
About This Place
The Nahanni country of the Dehcho is two worlds with a hard line between them: inside Nahanni National Park Reserve, hunting is closed to all but the Indigenous harvesters whose homeland it is; outside the park boundaries sprawls some of the Northwest Territories' most storied outfitted wilderness — the Mackenzie Mountains, where moose feed in willow river flats under peaks that don't have names and mountain caribou herds support carefully allocated outfitter quotas. Non-resident hunters in the NWT must hunt big game through a licensed outfitter, which in practice means booking one of the long-established Mackenzie Mountain operations: horse strings, bush planes, and ten-day hunts run to a rhythm set decades ago.
For residents, the region rewards serious boat-and-barrens self-sufficiency few possess. Everything here runs on remoteness mathematics: Fort Simpson and Fort Liard anchor supply, floatplanes bridge the rest, and weather rules the calendar. Verify current caribou management before dreaming — mountain herds here are watched closely, and quotas move. NWT licences, outfitter allocations, and export permits apply; the park line is absolute.
How to Get There
From Inuvik, the drive is approximately fly-in access required heading north into the bush. GPS: 61.4°N, 123.5°W. The last 20 km is logging road — 4WD recommended, especially after rain. ATVs are useful for accessing deeper hunting zones.
Parking & Access
Pull-off areas along the main access road. No formal parking lot. ATV unloading area available at the trailhead. Game check station located at the main entrance during peak season. Lock your vehicle and don't leave valuables visible — these areas are remote.

Best Time to Visit
Primary season: August - September. Early season (September) offers warm weather but bugs — bring repellent and patience. The rut period (late October to mid-November) is prime time for big game — bucks are active and responsive to calls. Mid-season typically offers the best balance of game activity and weather. Dawn and dusk are the most productive hours — plan to be in position 30 minutes before legal shooting time.
Terrain & Topography
Mackenzie Mountains wilderness around a protected river core: willow river flats, alpine plateaus, and nameless limestone peaks — floatplane-and-horse country where the park line divides absolute protection from allocated wilderness hunts.
Regulations & Permits
A valid Northwest Territories hunting licence and appropriate tags are required. This area falls under Wildlife Management Unit (WMU) regulations — check the current Northwest Territories Hunting Regulations for season dates, bag limits, and weapon restrictions. Draw/lottery tags may be required for certain species — apply early (spring deadline). Hunter orange/blaze orange is mandatory during firearms season. Report all harvests within the required timeframe.
Nearby Services
Nearest gas and supplies: Inuvik (fly-in access required). Stock up completely before heading in. Local butcher/processor within 30 minutes — call ahead during peak season. Hunting guides and outfitters operate in the area — highly recommended for first-time visitors. Ammunition and last-minute gear available at the general store.
Where to Stay
Hunting camps and outfitter lodges available with meal packages. Designated campgrounds nearby with basic amenities. Wall tents and semi-permanent camps are common in this area.
Cell Coverage & Safety
Cell coverage: Very limited — carry a satellite communicator (InReach, SPOT, or similar). Nearest hospital: Inuvik. Bear encounters are possible — carry bear spray and know how to use it. Always hunt with a partner when possible and file a detailed trip plan. Hypothermia is a real risk in late season — dress in layers and carry emergency shelter. Wear blaze orange — it saves lives.
