East Coast Trail Sections is an epic multi-day traverse in Newfoundland and Labrador, offering dramatic cliffs, sea cave access, coastal wilderness across 25-50 km sections of trail. With 800m of elevation gain, this is manageable for most active hikers.
The trail winds through rugged coastline, fjords, boreal forest, tundra, passing through diverse forest ecosystems and scenic viewpoints. The sense of wilderness and solitude increases with every step. East Coast Trail Sections regularly appears on lists of Canada's best hikes, and for good reason — it's the kind of trail that fundamentally changes how you see this country.

Trailhead is approximately 2-3 hours from St. John's. GPS: 47.6°N, 52.7°W. Paved access road to the trailhead parking lot. For point-to-point hikes, arrange a shuttle or second vehicle at the other trailhead. No public transit — you will need your own vehicle.
Stationnement et accès
Paved trailhead parking lot with space for 30+ vehicles. Fills early on summer weekends. Overflow parking along the access road when the lot is full. Free parking at the trailhead. No facilities at the trailhead — use the restroom before you arrive. Don't leave valuables in your vehicle.

Season: June - October. June: Spring freshness, waterfalls at peak flow, and long daylight hours. July-August: Prime hiking season. Warmest and driest conditions. September-October: Cooler temperatures make for comfortable hiking. September is many locals favorite month on the trails.
Terrain et topographie
Distance: 25-50 km sections. Elevation gain: 800m. Difficulty: Intermediate. The trail follows a well-marked path through rugged coastline. Rocky and rooty sections require sturdy footwear — trail runners are fine for experienced hikers, but boots recommended for most. River crossings may require fording in early season.

Free access — no permits needed for day hiking. Backcountry camping permit required for overnight trips — book online. Sites fill up quickly for popular dates. Stay on marked trails to protect fragile vegetation. Group size limits may apply — check with park office. Pack out all waste. Leave No Trace.
