Algonquin Canoe Routes offers some of the finest flatwater paddling in Ontario. Spanning 50-100 km, this route takes you through Canadian Shield, boreal forest, Great Lakes shoreline with 200+ lakes, portage system, wildlife along the way.
Rated beginner to advanced difficulty, this route offers a satisfying challenge without being overwhelming. Comment s'y rendre
Put-in point is approximately 45 minutes from Ottawa. GPS: 45.5°N, 78.3°W. Paved access to the launch point. Shuttle services available for one-way trips — book in advance. Plan your take-out point before launching — distances on water are deceiving.
Stationnement et accès
Boat launch with vehicle and trailer parking. Free parking at the launch site. If doing a shuttle, you can leave your vehicle at the take-out. Bring your own watercraft — no rentals at the site.

Season: May - October. Late June through August is the sweet spot — warm water, long days, and calm conditions. Mid-summer offers the most stable weather and warmest water temperatures. September: Less traffic on the water, spectacular fall colours, and cooler paddling conditions. Wind can be a factor in fall — check forecasts and plan accordingly.

Water type: Flatwater. Calm, open water with occasional wind chop. Total distance: 50-100 km. Surrounding landscape: Canadian Shield, boreal forest, Great Lakes shoreline. Open water crossings can be exposed to wind — hug the shoreline when possible.
Réglements et permis
All watercraft must carry required Transport Canada safety equipment: PFD for each person, whistle or sound signalling device, bailer, and 15m throw rope. Some portage routes pass through Indigenous territory — respect all posted guidelines. Park permits required if paddling through provincial or national park waters. Leave No Trace: pack out everything, use established campsites for multi-day trips, and respect wildlife from a distance (especially nesting birds along shorelines).

This is remote wilderness paddling — carry a satellite communicator. No cell service on the water. Nearest hospital: Ottawa. Cold water warning: Ontario's waters can cause hypothermia quickly — wear appropriate thermal protection. Wear your PFD at all times on the water. Lightning on open water is extremely dangerous — get off the water at the first sign of thunderstorms. File a float plan with someone onshore.
