Bloodvein River offers some of the finest whitewater paddling in Manitoba. Spanning 120 km, this route takes you through boreal shield, prairie grasslands, Hudson Bay lowlands with class ii-iii rapids, wilderness, remote along the way.
Rated intermediate difficulty, this route offers a satisfying challenge without being overwhelming. The boreal shield scenery is world-class, and day trips can be tailored to your schedule and skill level. Paddling Bloodvein River is one of those Canadian experiences you'll talk about for years.
Comment s'y rendre
Put-in point is approximately 3-4 hours from Thompson. GPS: 52.1°N, 94.5°W. Paved access to the launch point. Shuttle services available for one-way trips — book in advance. Plan your take-out point before launching — distances on water are deceiving.
Stationnement et accès
Boat launch with vehicle and trailer parking. Small parking fee ($5-10) may apply during peak season. If doing a shuttle, you can leave your vehicle at the take-out. Kayak/canoe rental available at the launch during summer months.

Season: June - August. Spring (May-June): Higher water levels make for exciting paddling but can increase difficulty. Cold water — wetsuit recommended. Mid-summer offers the most stable weather and warmest water temperatures. September: Less traffic on the water, spectacular fall colours, and cooler paddling conditions. Avoid spring runoff if you are not experienced with moving water.

Water type: Whitewater. River gradient creates Class II-III rapids with some Class IV sections. Total distance: 120 km. Surrounding landscape: boreal shield, prairie grasslands, Hudson Bay lowlands. Watch for submerged rocks and sweepers (fallen trees) in river sections.

All watercraft must carry required Transport Canada safety equipment: PFD for each person, whistle or sound signalling device, bailer, and 15m throw rope. Whitewater helmet strongly recommended (mandatory for Class III+). Some portage routes pass through Indigenous territory — respect all posted guidelines. Park permits required if paddling through provincial or national park waters. Leave No Trace: pack out everything, use established campsites for multi-day trips, and respect wildlife from a distance (especially nesting birds along shorelines).

Lightning on open water is extremely dangerous — get off the water at the first sign of thunderstorms. File a float plan with someone onshore.
