Clayoquot Sound offers some of the finest sea kayaking paddling in British Columbia. Spanning 40-60 km, this route takes you through coastal rainforest, Rocky Mountains, interior plateau with temperate rainforest, beach camping, wildlife along the way.



Rated intermediate difficulty, this route offers a satisfying challenge without being overwhelming. The coastal rainforest scenery is world-class, and day trips can be tailored to your schedule and skill level. Paddling Clayoquot Sound is one of those Canadian experiences you'll talk about for years.

Put-in point is approximately 2-3 hours from Vancouver. GPS: 49.1°N, 125.4°W. Paved access to the launch point. Shuttle services available for one-way trips — book in advance.

Stationnement et accès

Boat launch with vehicle and trailer parking. Free parking at the launch site. Bring your own watercraft — no rentals at the site.

Season: June - September. Late June through August is the sweet spot — warm water, long days, and calm conditions. Mid-summer offers the most stable weather and warmest water temperatures. September: Less traffic on the water, spectacular fall colours, and cooler paddling conditions. Wind can be a factor in fall — check forecasts and plan accordingly.

Water type: Sea Kayaking. Mixed conditions — flatwater lakes connected by moving river sections. Total distance: 40-60 km. Surrounding landscape: coastal rainforest, Rocky Mountains, interior plateau. Open water crossings can be exposed to wind — hug the shoreline when possible.

Réglements et permis

All watercraft must carry required Transport Canada safety equipment: PFD for each person, whistle or sound signalling device, bailer, and 15m throw rope. Park permits required if paddling through provincial or national park waters. Leave No Trace: pack out everything, use established campsites for multi-day trips, and respect wildlife from a distance (especially nesting birds along shorelines).

Outfitter at the put-in offers kayak/canoe rental, shuttle service, and guided trips. Nearest supplies: Vancouver (2-3 hours). Waterproof map/guide available for purchase at the outfitter. Guided trips highly recommended for first-timers on this route.

Campgrounds and day-use areas along the waterway. Designated tent pads with fire pits and pit toilets at most campsites. Lodges and cabins available for those wanting comfort before or after the trip.

This is remote wilderness paddling — carry a satellite communicator. No cell service on the water. Nearest hospital: Vancouver. Cold water warning: British Columbia's waters can cause hypothermia quickly — wear appropriate thermal protection. Wear your PFD at all times on the water. Check weather forecasts before launching — conditions change quickly. File a float plan with someone onshore.
