Seasonal Tips

Spring: walleye stage in the current seams — but verify the zone's spring closures and slot limits before targeting them. Summer: channel cat after dark on cut bait in the deeper runs; smallmouth on the rock edges at dawn; pike in the weedy slackwater all day. Fall: perch school along the drop-offs and walleye feed ahead of winter. Always: any large sucker you can't positively identify goes straight back — copper redhorse are protected and exist only here.

About This Place

The Richelieu is the water highway of Montérégie — draining Lake Champlain north to the St. Lawrence at Sorel through a corridor of towns, marinas, and history. For anglers it may be Québec's most democratic fishery: bass and walleye along the current seams, northern pike in the slack bays, yellow perch everywhere, and a channel catfish population that has made the river a destination for anglers who like their fights heavy and their evenings long. Shore access is superb by big-river standards — municipal parks, wharves, and the Chambly canal-side make a boat optional.

The river's structure does the guiding: the Chambly basin spreads the current into a lake-like bowl, the rapids above it oxygenate a storied stretch, and the Saint-Ours dam downstream — with its fish ladder — marks a natural gathering point. One caution matters more here than anywhere: the Richelieu is core habitat of the copper redhorse, a large sucker found nowhere on Earth but Québec and legally protected. Release any redhorse you can't identify, immediately. Québec licence required; check the zone's walleye slots.

Best Time to Visit

Spring (May-June): Post-ice-out is prime time for Achigan. Water temperatures are ideal and fish are actively feeding after the long winter.
Summer (July-August): Switch to early morning and late evening bites. Deep water trolling produces best results.
Fall (September-October): Arguably the best season — cooler water triggers aggressive feeding. Fall colours make this an especially scenic time to visit.
Winter: Ice fishing is productive from January through March. Check ice conditions with local outfitters.

Terrain & Topography

A broad, current-driven corridor from Lake Champlain to the St. Lawrence at Sorel: the lake-like Chambly basin, oxygenated rapids, weedy slack bays, and dredged runs. Superb shore access via parks, wharves, and the canal-side path.

Regulations & Permits

A valid Quebec fishing licence is required for all anglers 16 and older. Licences can be purchased online through the provincial government website or at local tackle shops. Conservation licence holders have reduced catch limits. Check the current Quebec Fishing Regulations Summary for species-specific size and catch limits — regulations for Achigan are strictly enforced. Bait restrictions may apply — check zone-specific rules. Catch-and-release is encouraged for trophy-sized fish to maintain the healthy population.
